Personal Update

I’ve taken an extended break from writing to pursue some personal goals, and attempt to achieve true work/life balance. It feels good to be back.

So where have I been over this past year?

A huge chunk of my time has been spent transitioning from a work at home/stay at home mom to working full-time in an office setting. My husband has been a real partner in this—sharing the household tasks and balancing the art of still being present with our two children (in the midst of all of life’s busyness). I adore this man, and could not imagine doing life without him.

I earned my SHRM-CP and am now certified as a human resources professional. Although most of my career has touched on HR areas, I took this step to focus my professional growth as an HR strategist.

I also took a full-time opportunity at Wheaton College as an HR Generalist. Some people hear that title and think I spend my days recruiting staff. That’s actually only 40% of my job. I also delve into employee relations, performance management, organizational development, training and development, and legal compliance. I’ve drafted policies and procedures for the institution and am part of a team that is helping to improve its use of technology—all while managing its change from paper-based to computer-based systems. I am an all-around HR practitioner and this has been a great career transition. I took a step back from executive management to take this role, but I wanted to get some hands on experience in some additional areas before stepping into an HR Director role, which I doubt is too far in the future.

I stepped out of a volunteer teaching role at a church about six months ago and found myself missing that opportunity to teach the Bible. To meet that need, and continue exercising my skill of teaching the Bible, I started the Simple Pursuit Podcast. You can find it on Google Play and iTunes. The podcast’s mission is to encourage people to pursue a deeper relationship with Jesus.

So, that’s what’s been happening with me. Here’s what you can expect going forward:

  1. Regular podcast episodes that walk through scripture. There’s a lot of bad biblical teaching out there. If you want to dive into scripture, learn what it means, and ways it might be accurately applied to your life, this is a good place to start. If you’re curious about a relationship with Jesus—but have some doubts keeping you from taking the plunge, this is also a good place to start.
  2. Regular blog posts about everything a leader deals with—managing employee performance, organizational development, how to hire the right employee, how to manage change, etc. I’ll also post some tips for you as you think about advancing your career. Since I’ve reviewed resumes and interviewed candidates on a regular basis, I’ve become an expert in interviewing in a way that makes you stand out, as well as how to follow up appropriately when the interview is over. Regardless of what stage you are at in your career, I believe you’ll find this helpful.
  3. Regular blog posts on how to raise money smarter. You might have heard that I raised over $750k in less than two years time—without a development team. I love sharing how I did it and helping non-profits develop strategies to secure large gifts. If you’re just starting out in fundraising; if you know people with capacity to give, but don’t know how to approach them; or if you’ve tried a lot of stuff, but nothing seems to be working—then this resource is for you.

I look forward to journeying together in the weeks and months ahead.
